Drag&Drop (external) bitmap files onto button without DotNet ?

I'm pretty confused:
i know ( due to several posts about the topic on various places) that i can use dotnet controls to recieve&process the drag&drop events and do whatever i want then.
But without dotnet, is there really no way i can register my own drag&drop handler on my button of choice ?

It's especially irritating because maxscript has the dragAndDrop Core Interface available, which provides functions to register any Max window handle for drag&drop. But there is no way i can specify a custom handler then, neither is there any documentation for a possible standard name for a draganddrop eventhandler.
The Maxscript docs state
Quote: <boolean>dragAndDrop.enableDragAndDrop <HWND>window <boolean>on
This method allows you to enable DnD for a given window (and its children). If no custom DragAndDropHandler is supplied, a default one is used that will accept dropped scene files for opening and scripts for running. Returns true if successful and false otherwise.

So there should to be a way to supply a custom DragAndDrop Handler - no ?

Even more confusing is, that when looking in the SDK docs and publishing part of that function, there is a third argument which is exactly there to pass a custom handler. It's just not exposed to Maxscript !!!

So is ther really no way to register my standard maxscript control to recieve draganddrop events and specify the eventhandler in the script, without using dotnet controls ?
