Projecting Vertex Paint Information

Hey

Im new to blender and i used to use Zbrush Alot

In Zbrush it was possible to paint your high poly model without any UV co-ordinates applied and then project this information onto a low poly version that had UV information and turn it into a diffuse map.

Is this possible in blender or does your high poly have to have UV information applied.

I only ask as vertex painting my low poly is a bad idea as the poly count is so low that it is hard to get a detailed texture.

I have tried subdividing my low poly and then vertex painting it but this increases the tri count and it is obviously ineffective.

If anyone could help i would appreciate it greatly
