Hotkey 4: hardcoded to wireframe?

This is really pissing me off.
I'm trying to assign my custom-made wireframe script to button 4 and Maya keeps reverting back to the default one (which I don't like because its not a toggle).

I've unbinded the key in the hotkey editor, and even deleted that line in userHotkeys.mel. I've also looked through userRunTimeCommands and userNameCommands and deleted any remains of any wireframe scripts there which I used before.

Still, I open up Maya and press 4. Hotkey editor says it's been reverted back.
Another time, the Hotkey editor said that 4 wasn't even assigned to anything - but hitting that button still activated the default wireframe view.

Either the hotkey editor is a piece of bugged crap like so many other things in Maya, or this hotkey is hardcoded into the program. So how do you bypass this?

EDIT: Same thing seem to happen with other numeric buttons.
I assign a custom display script to 7. Save. Open up Maya again, press 7 and no... I get some hardcoded bullshit instead of myscript. Hotkey editor says 7 is assigned to my script, but pressing 7 and looking in the script editor tells me that the default BS ran instead of my script.

EDIT2: Solved it by going into the installdir/scripts/startup and editing the hotkeySetup.mel -file, commenting out the line for the 4-key. Sigh... lame...

which version of maya? there was bug found in 2011 (or 12, can't remember exactly) that wouldn't allow you to rebind the default hotkeys through hotkey editor/user prefs.

to work around it you would need to execute the hotkey bindings manually in something like your userSetup.mel.
