External Python-Based UI accessing an open Maya Session

Hello!
I am pretty new to the world of Python in Maya. I have done a bunch of MEL inside of Maya by itself though.

I can not share my code unfortunately, but the question might be pretty basic:
I need to access an open session of maya (full control of commands/windows etc) from a python script that's running separately with its UI based in wx. (I am running in Linux)

Is this possible? The reasoning behind this is that the eventual goal would be a program that could access specific functions cross-platform.

As an added question:
Is it okay to import the maya Python libraries as extensions to the path? - sys.path.append("directory")

Sorry about my lack of knowledge in the matter, any help would be greatly appreciated!

John

I actually just started writing some of the docs for a tool that we use here that I believe accomplishes your goal.

See GitHub -> https://github.com/westernx/remotecontrol
and the docs -> http://remotecontrol.readthedocs.org/en/latest/

I have only demoed the interactive interpreter there, but there is another to provide an API for other processes to use.

Whoa! Very cool! Thanks so much for your help guys. I am not sure when this message will actually be approved to go through, but this stuff is very useful and I appreciate it.

As I mentioned in my other reply (which has not yet gone though): I have decided to get the script working another way instead of way that I described above.

(I am passing a ton of arguments to the external script instead of being able to access the maya window directly. So in other words, you have to call the script from within Maya atm.)
