particles 2 texture
quick question: has it ever been done before to write a plugin or script that creates a texture based on nearby or colliding particles on a surface? Kind of the same effect as a wetmap, but inside Maya and ideally customizable (color of texture-point based on radius of particle and age).
We used something similar heavily at MPC but I don't have that at home.

You can get something similar with SOuP:
I believe there's already an arrayToTexture node or something similar, which will allow you to use that as texture map also.

ArrayToTexture only works for alpha currently (color is on the backburner). Instead you can use attributeTransfer to transfer color from particle to vertex at the same time you transfer weight maps.
