Question where does function showSG comes from

looking and output on script editor i made this as shortcut on the shelfbar button command but when i start maya it doesnt work but once I right click on object and choose Material Attributes then onwards the code below continues to work ?

it's probably a MEL script in Maya's script folder that is only sourced on demand.... hence why your script doesn't work until you perform some action that sources it.
