.vtx same as .pt?

Why does maya reads polygon points as both .vtx and .pt?

Both cmds.select('polySphere1.vtx[:]') and cmds.select('polySphere1.pt[:]') will select the same thing but if I try to select the points on a lattice I can only do that using .pt[:] ? Is there a particular reason for this?

they are not the same. the .pnt(pt) attribute is for storing tweaks to the control point. I'm not sure why selecting it also selects the point itself, probably just for convenience. However I wouldn't ever use the .pt attribute for this, if you want a common attribute that actually really does represent the point itself, use the .cp (control point) attribute.

Because of the way the Maya API works and nodes inherit properties from other base and abstract classes, geometry nodes all share similar parent node classes. Take a look at Mayas node reference for mesh and lattice and you'll see that they both share some of the same parent classes, controlPoint being the important one in this case.
