Copying weights from meshes with influences (posible?)

The problem
I´m trying to copy skin weights to export in fbx that doesn´t accept non-deformer history (I have done it quite a lot in the past and know the usual problems), but this is the first time that I try to do it with a mesh that has influences. The influence points are in this case (joints that are) parented to a root.

The steps I´m following
1- Mesh rigged with one joint acting as a root and 10 joints parented to that one (with the Edit>Parent command)) so that I can animate the futures and still the face can rotate and move. This mesh has other meshes combined into it.
2-Deleted all the extra bind poses and reset the pose (for all the joints). The "Go to bind pose" command works well.
3-Choosed the original mesh, Shift-choosed the target (that is also skinned to the root) and hit copy skin weights.

The error
// Warning: line 0: Skipping 'polySurfaceShape80' since it is not a skinned object. //
// Error: line 0: Must select a source and a destination skin, or components on a source and destination skin. //

Exporting doesn´t work either
"Failed to export the attribute map".

Questions
1-Can I clean the polysurfaceshape80 alone, somehow?
2-Why could it be that it doesn´t want to export the weights as a map?
3-Could the mistake be related to the fact that I parented the influences to a root bone?
Isn´t this the normal way to rig facial features for games? (I usually use blend shapes, but Unity doesn´t support that)
