Eyes Rigging problem (moving pivot)


I'm fairly new to maya, I am trying to do the rig for the character's eyes. The skeleton has already been bound and both the head and the two eye balls follow the head bone correctly. I realised later that the two eyes in the model were joint and had a pivot in the middle, so I split them and centred the pivots in them.

Now, I tired to do the eyes rigging by having a shape in front of the face to use as the aim and I also tried to use driven keys to regulate the rotation of each eye. When the character is facing the front everything looks ok but if I turn her head to one side and then try to rotate the eyes, the pivots look shifted and rotating the eyes causes the eyeballs to move inside the head.

I tried deleting non-deformer and channels but still these pivots seem to have a mind of their own...

Has anyone ever come across this issue?

Make sure the eyes are only being influenced by their respective eye joints in the weight mapping
