Mental Ray Vs V-ray

What Render-er do you used?? and why?
  04 April 2013
I like Vray.

But in my everyday production, I also use Maya software, Maya hardware, Vector, Mental Ray and 3Delight.

The day before yesterday it was vray and today it's mental ray. As for why the answer is because it was there on render global

I've been using mental ray my entire professional career. Recently we switched to v-ray and god I hope I never have to use mr for maya again.

After using mental ray for several years, I switched to V-Ray a few months ago, and am really enjoying it. Setting up scenes is fast and straight-forward, and the results are generally very predictable. The whole workflow feels more intuitive and less of a hackathon. Also, the customer support from Chaos Group is absolutely phenomenal. Their developers are heavily active on their forum, and they're generally very responsive when it comes to bug reports and feature requests. Contrast that with ADSK/mental ray, I think I've had one single reply ever, for all the bug reports and feature requests I've submitted. It's sort of like a black hole.

There are a few downsides to V-Ray. Namely, Maya Fur is not supported because ADSK won't open the API apparently, but they do have their own fur shader which seems pretty capable. I don't know if it can be driven by Maya's hair system or not (?). I have also encountered some NURBS trimmed surfaces / CAD data from Solidworks that V-Ray could not render without first being converted to poly, whereas mental ray and maya software rendered them okay. The V-Ray developers were helpful, but could not resolve the issue.

At this point, we generally only use mental ray to render updates on legacy projects.

Hell YES, ive been on vray for about 2 months and ive been able to ramp up an get the hang of it in no time support is great, with MR its always some glitch you have to work against all the time

MR is going by the way side fast with Arnold and other options out there i don't see the point unless the job your at uses it then yea

I long used mental ray, but vray is just easier, in terms of workarounds and solutions.
  04 April 2013
I used MR before. I have switched to VRay on the first beta.
I have never come back to MR.
  04 April 2013
wow ten or so posts in and no flame war

mr is perfectly capable, just not so great in maya implementation wise.

i use both by the way

there are some news... mr is coming back...
  04 April 2013
its trying to come back but its too little too late with all the hardware advancement you would think MR would be at the forefront for the most part where most other compies would be trying to keep up with them, and yes the MR implimentaion in maya is horrific, now in max i don't mind using it as the integration is pretty good.
