Network Rendering Tips - Muster

We are preparing to compete in a 49 hour animation competition. The school we are going to be working at has a render farm, managed by Muster. When I ran a test render last week I noticed that all 100 nodes started rendering, but that they slammed the network to the point transfer speeds were about 40k/sec.

Not only will we slow the network to a crawl with these speeds, but it's going to take half an hour for each computer to open a job before it even starts rendering.

I've figured out how to get each PC to render the results to a local drive so we don't have to pull back off the network. Are there any other tips anyone can offer on how to optimize things so we go a little easier on the network and perhaps save some more render time?
