Question Rendering Fur with Shave and a Haircut Plugin

I'm new to this Shave and a Haircut Plugin using Maya 2013 and have been provided an existing scene with a character covered in fur created by Shave and a Haircut. I've made a few adjustments to the scene and now when I go to render the character doesn't look the same as previous renders from a previous animator who created the scene.

Orig - previous render I'm trying to match quality of

My 1st Render - No cut map file - character is too hairy specifically in face/mouth area

My 2nd Render - Cut map file - apparently I need to select inverted option (see next attempt)

My 3rd Render - Cut map inverted - now there is no hair at all in the mouth/ears area and quality is not the same as the original

Please help me to understand what I am missing...

Thank you in advance,

Do you have a pic of your cut map, would be helpful to take a look at that. Black means no fur, white all fur. Also there is a shader pack from a guy named puppet, I am tryin to look for the current one now, your coworker may have used this shader in addition with Shave to get that look. These shaders give a little more control over the color/look of your shave hair. I will link when i find it . My first impression of the look is that he seems to have a couple more spec highlights, also a little softer look as well. There should be an attribute "hair passes" try bumping that up to around 2-3 and it will soften up some of that hair.

Hey oreanimate thanks for the reply!

The Hair Passes is already set to 3. I bumped it up to 5 but didn't really change much.

I've attached the cutmap, it seems pretty simple and only black & white. But I remember reading to use grey for 50% hair so I just tried changing the whites to grey and that helped a lot! (See the new pic).

I'll have to play around with that some more to see if I can get an exact match but at least it's a start!

Thank you!
