Texture Linked Toonline Render Problems

Sorry, that title's a mouthful.

I have been doing a lot of coloured toonlines in Maya for 3D to blend with 2D shows.

If you unwrap an object, you can change the colour of it's paint fx toonlines by linking the profile colour, intersection colour etc to a texture. It's not super precise but it can get you out of a nightmare when you have two objects with different coloured toonlines that intersect at the same point (ex where grey headlights meet the yellow metal on a car).

This has stopped working in Maya 2013. I get two working renders in a row, and on the third the toonlines do not show up. Keep rendering and eventually Maya will crash.

If I convert the .ma to a Maya 2012 compatible file (get rid of all -ch and corresponding values in a text editor/via mel script) it renders correctly with no issues. If I save that file in Maya 2012, bring it back into 2013 the same problem occurs.

Do any of you guys have any idea what might be going on? I'm starting to run out of ideas...
Thank you so much,
