getting mia_light_surface to work with irradiance particles?

I'm not sure what I am missing, but I do not seem to be able to get the shader to work withirradiance particles like I'm able to with FG/GI.. is this just a limitation? seems odd to me.

I was attempting to simulate the effect of backlit channel letters, but am failing. So I tried to fake it with a pointlight and some others oddness..

only drawback to this is if I try to recreate a frosted/translucent facing.. the point light becomes obviously ugly.

any ideas? the above images are done with irradiance particles.
