Lightbulb Native / Builtin IBL Tutorial

You can find a tutorial on the Native/Builtin IBL as it's exposed in our UI here:

Native/Builtin IBL

The UI can be found here.

The UI may not work because it references features not in 2011 (like unified sampling) but the Builtin IBL is there.

You would have to manually add the string options. You can find them in the docs:

http://docs.autodesk.com/MENTALRAY/...ental-ray-help/

Click manual > Scene Description Language > Options > Image-Based Lighting

Thanks for this. This is a real eye opener for Maya rendering. I am just learning Maya so this is perfect timing and I have been looking into many other render solutions over the last year.

I have a question. How does this "brute force" method hold up for animation of characters?

Would FG introduce flicker for interior scenes - even with portal lights?

I'll be doing some testing with this later, but curious in the meantime.

This actually holds up very well. Insufficient Quality is seen as grain, and a little of that in motion is usually acceptable but easy to eliminate by increasing the Quality parameter.

Remember, this is a direct area light, it does not suffer from interpolation problems like Final Gather or Irradiance Mapping techniques.

If lighting an interior, this isn't very helpful, you still need the usual portal lights and final gather, in that case I would recommend the fgshooter script .

Yeah, actually I was going ask about that multi-camera solution. I had a go with that recently in a tutorial so I have some kind of an idea.

Well this native Ibl is really interesting then for exterior scenes.

Thanks for this info. Extremely helpful.

Between fgshooter and Native IBL, lighting in mental ray should be pretty easy to accomplish with a lot less trouble now.

In the future it will improve even more. . .
