I think you might get an interesting (though somewhat rendertime expensive) result also by texturing the refraction (and possibly also the reflection) glossiness.

@tobbew Yeah, definitely. I'm a big fan of mib_color_mix. Instead of painting different weights for different attributes of the material, I'll just setup 3 different mia materials and paint a weight map for each material in ZBrush.

I saw a post here about SSS and ice. He didn't provide precise numbers, so I had to figure it out on my own. His has a greenish cast which I didn't figure out completely and went with straight white. You can see my result in the attached image. The upper portion of the pillar is SSS ice, while the bottom is mia ice. I was pretty happy to see SSS passed photons. I'm guessing that's why the ceiling at the top is brighter, which matched when the pillar was completely mia ice.
