Thumbs up shadow of translucent fabric?

i have s translucent material which cast shadow,
but the shadow is pitch black.
I'm using mental ray for maya.
what material should i be using for translucent fabric with realistic shadow?

Translucence alone won't (necessarily) count as transparency, allowing "light" through. Depending on your shader, you should probably turn on some transparency as well, even if it's just a little. But it may be difficult to get a decent cloth look with the old, crusty Maya shaders.

You could try the mia_material_x, it's really quite amazing. It has channels for transparency with nice glossiness controls, translucency, ambient occlusion, and also cutout opacity if you wanted to, say, use a lacy pattern texture and have the light actually shine fully through in places.

And it's not only energy-conserving (more physically accurate and therefore more predictable) but often renders faster than other legacy shaders as well, due to the various thresholds it can use which reduce extraneous calculations. At this point, I feel like I'm a mia_mat_x salesman so I'll shut up now!

If you're using raytraced shadows, be sure the ray depth is set properly in your Render Globals; default is usually just 1 trace. The mia_mat_x also has its own ray depth setting for reflections and refractions.

put the out transparency of your alpha channel of your texture into the cutout opacity. you can use a reverse and a luminance node between the 2.

if it is cloth that you want to have translucent shadow, then, you can use mib_shadow_transparency connected to shadow slot of your shader, then you can use any map for transparency of your cloth's shadow.

and off course, i recommend using mia_material too...
