reflection as alpha

I have a plane that is creating a reflection. When I look at the alpha though of the image it's using the entire plane to create it. Is there a way to use the reflection to create the alpha channel?

I know i could do it with render overrides and just render a luma matte, but I'm trying to avoid rendering twice.

with mental ray?

I think a mip_matteshadow can do the trick by enabling "catch reflections" in the shader.

But you'll have to enable the shaders first.

Other renderers have matte shadow shaders too, I think it would do what you're trying to do. And it's a very usefull shader overall to work with : )
