Maya 2012 DirectIrradiance Pass Bug?

Hey guys,

maybe someone can help me out with this. For me, it's seems like bug.
I have a scene with two area lights ( mental ray shape - rectangle )
And when i create the material color pass and the direct irradiance pass
i can not recreate the diffuse pass. It seems that the direct irradiance pass
is not able to combine both arealights into that pass.
When i disable one light, everything looks good again.

Can anyone confirm that?
If it's not a bug, then it's totally useless in my view.

cheers

naik

Hey guys,

no success so far.
Here a little test scene in order to check the problem with the passes
direct irradiance / direct irradiance no shadows

One cool side-effect is that you can "almost" extract a shadow pass with those two
passes ( DIrradiance no shadows ( subtract ) DIrradiance )
Although it's not 100% exactly the same. But in my view much better than the shadow raw
pass which almost double the rendertime, or more - which is ridiculous in my view.
The normal shadow pass is always black - which is odd anyways...

cheers

I have noticed the same thing, but only with the mia. Try the pass system with a blinn and they all work as expected. I've had a problem with a large number of the passes from the pass system both on my home and work computer when using area lights and mias. Even the 'beauty' pass has been totally jacked up for me. The only passes I have tried to use that actually appear to work for me consistently are indirect, reflection, and refraction. I thought I had direct irradiance working, but then tried it at work yesterday and it came out 0,0,0 in rgb. Strange.

Yap,

the passes are working great with the "old / standard shaders"
But who is using Blinn etc anyways?

Check this out, although it's still not correct in my view

Shader Passes supported mia_material_x_passes With pass contribution map support: Diffuse, Diffuse Without Shadows, Direct Irradiance, Direct Irradiance Without Shadows, Raw Shadow, Shadow, Specular, Specular Without Shadows, Translucence, Translucence Without Shadows.

Without pass contribution map support: Incandescence, Indirect, Reflection, Refraction

Partial pass contribution map support (Diffuse pass matches pass conribution maps): Beauty

mi_metallic_paint_x_passes Ambient Material Color, Beauty, Diffuse, Direct Irradiance, Indirect, Reflection, Specular misss_fast_shader_x_passes Beauty, Diffuse, Direct Irradiance, Specular mi_car_paint_phen_x_passes Ambient Material Color, Beauty, Diffuse, Direct Irradiance, Indirect, Reflection, Specular

That's odd in my view because there are many passes which are not working right
with mia_x_passes...

Hey Justin,

i think also, that the problems are coming with the MR Arealights.
But we have to do some tests in order to sort it out i think.

Well I tried with a spotlight today because I was thinking the same thing and nope, my passes were equally jacked with a spotlight. Again they all worked perfect with a blinn, even the shadow pass, but the only ones that came through on the mia were indirect and reflection. I didn't have any refraction because it was just a test scene but i am suspecting the refraction would have worked as well because it has been consistent in the past.

Hmmm...it is interesting to note the ones that are working for me are the ones in the group 'without pass contribution map support.' Not sure what sort of connection there is behind the scenes, but there has got to be some sort of correlation there. I did read that in the manuals before but it never hit me until you posted it that the ones that appear to be working are all in that one group.

Hey Justin,

i can confirm that.
With Spotlights i get the same "bug"
and in my view, it doesn't make any difference if my passes are in contribution map or not.

This really sucks man

Yea it does suck. I may end up getting mental core. Last time I tested that system it worked great. About to do one more run through with it in 2013. Never tested it in that version of Maya but I imagine it's working just as great as it did in 2012.

Maya and that pass system have always been a royal pain in the a$$.

Naik,

Which passes actually work for you consistently with the mia? Just curious if they are the same passes for you as for me, or if you are able to get more of them working than myself.

Thanks,

Justin

There was a few issues with the mia_materials an passes in 2013. This affected only the mia_material (SSS, car paint, etc were fine)

This may be related but should be reported anyway.

Right on...since I'm currently at home and just read this I may actually remember to report it!
