nParticle "fill object" up-res

So I have an nParticle system that I've been working on for a while (granular sand), but I'm trying to find a way of filling an object with this nParticle system I have already created, instead of the default particles. Am I missing something easy?
I am also wondering if there is a way of increasing the resolution of the nParticles AFTER an object has been filled with 'fill object" command?
