Smile hair system curve override?

hi guys.

I know there is a lot of questions relating to maya hair here but I cant seem to find information about how to do this or if it is even possible.

I am creating hair for my character to be rendered in either MR or Arnold.

To help keep rendering times cost efficient I want to know if it is possible to style hair curves independently if they share the same hairsystem?

Like basically i want to have my curves in separate layers ( like top hair curves, middle etc)

I want to be able to control individual groups of curves with their own settings, like clump size width etc.

Is this possible to do with the same hair system? I tried the follicle dynamic override setting but it doesnt seem to change anything. I want to be able to do this without creating multiple hair systems if that is possible.

Thanks in advance!!
