How can I make instance size match nparticle size?

I'm making an nparticle system that has randomized size per particle. The varying particle sizes collide with each other correctly. No problems there.

But I also have each particle generating geometry instances that each have randomized scale as well. Ideally, each instance will match the scale of it's associated nparticle, but I can find no way to do that. I can set up expressions to give the scalePP on each instance a random value, so I would think it's as easy as hooking the generated scalePP value of each nparticle into the creation expression I've set up for the instances, but nothing I've tried seems to work.

Here is the expressions I'm using now to control the instances.

float $scaleNum = rand(.05,.3);

nParticleShape1.customIndexPP = rand(0,3);
nParticleShape1.customScalePP = <<$scaleNum,$scaleNum,$scaleNum>>;

nParticleShape1.customRotationPP = <<0,rand(0,360),0>>;

The nparticle scalePP is controlled in the nparticleUI using the particle size and radius scale rollouts, but plugging any of those channels into my expression doesn't seem to work at all.

Can anyone help? Thanks!

In the instancer rollout, click "allow all data types" and then for scale choose radiusPP.
