nParticle Mesh conversion issues

I am working on oil spraying out of a pipe and set up an nParticle system. I have had trouble converting the nParticles to polygons to smooth it out as no mesh will show up. I am pretty new to using nParticles, but I have tried on my own to fix the issue by looking at a couple of threads: Thread 1 Thread 2.

I have tried all the methods suggested (i.e. adjusting the Output Mesh attributes) to no avail.

In the rare ocasion when a mesh does somehow show up, it looks very tube/caterpillar-like instead of the liquid spray I had earlier with a much different behavior. In addition, this error will come up a lot when I try a conversion:

Could not find unique object to query. Please be sure a single particle or soft body object which has goals is selected
