Question DMM texture issue

OS & Software: Windows 7 64-bit, Maya 2012

I made DMM floor/walls, then a polygon table & hammer, then turned them into DMM objects. After I got the result I wanted in shaded view, I used Maya substances to texture the wood. Since Mental Ray doesn't seem to like substances, I did a software batch render, with 2 point lights in the scene. Here's the result: What is causing the texturing issue on the splinters?

My first guess was the texture is getting stretched out really bad when it splinters, so I re-applied the material to the object, to no effect. I then supposed it may be a render problem, since the hammer also exhibits some shadow weirdness. I am new to 3D modeling/rendering and haven't been able to find an answer, so if you have a solution to the problem, I will be grateful.
