Noob question about video effects

Hello all,

I have a couple of questions that I think some of you might be able to answer easily. I have never touched After Effects and I'm not sure of all of it's capabilities so these questions might seem obvious.

I am interested to know what technique and software you guys think Fantasy Flight and WOTC used to get these effects on what seem to be mostly 2D images.

Here are two examples of what I'm talking about:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNewZZPKH-U

See how they look like digital paintings but they have a layered 3D look to them? To me some of the shots actually look like 3D animation but most of them look 2D with effects applied.

First off, do you think they used After effects to do this and secondly does anyone know of any tutorials that could help me research these effects? I've always wanted to give After Effects a try but have never had the time or a good reason to. Thanks for your help!

The first video seems to be based on After Effects layers.
There are tons of tutorials ie:

The second is real 3d animation but it smells like Daz3d
which along with Poser or I-Clone is not exactly the kind
of software that gives the most proffesional result but it
seems easy to learn and you can check it here:

Maybe they even give a free edition, i'm not sure- never
touch this stuff.
Probably Cinema4d is overall what you need but you must
be determined to devote a large amount of time (and money)
to it. It also has a good integration with AE CC. I would start
with After Effects knowing what i know now.
