Energy Rings - best approach?
Say I'm working on a student project and need some advice. Basically, I have a robot with an "energy" sphere that has a ring moving down away from it - it's to show movement / thrust. Think "Eve" from "Wall-E" but if she had some type of energy showing that she is hovering. This robot and sphere will be modeled in Maya and then comped over live action footage.
My question is this, what might be the best way to do the energy ring / thrust? My thought was to model it ( as a simple shape) in Maya and do the timing / animation on it. have it on a seperate layare so then in Nuke ( or After effects ) i could use a mask path to re-create the circle, then use maybe a depth pass & AO pass to give it some real world feel.
Or another thought was a mix of tracking and mask shapes in Nuke or AE.
Anyway I'm working through this and thought i'd reach out to see if anyone had some idea's. I've attached 2 screen shots from a rough example in amay. The energy ring is in green. one is near the top, then a few seconds later would be the lower one. Hope that helps visualize the question.
