Can't display backgnd. on Photoshop transparent PNG's

I've been rendering scenes to PNG for sometime because it is small in size and supports transparency. I opened one of these PNG files in Photoshop and background areas were transparent (checkered) as expected but I couldn't, in any ways, see the rendered sky background.

1. Where is the setting in Photoshop that displays the background area?

2. If I display it and make corrections to the background, how can I save the file again with transparency?
