June/July 2003 Official Animation Challenge Guidelines - June 2nd - July 12th

Wow that was a bit of a hiatus wasn't it? Yes sorry about that but due to the numerous activities that happened last month it was a bit difficult to setup and run our monthly challenges.
With that said welcome once again to the CGTalk challenges. First off I must say the Animation and VFX challenges really took off in our previous challenges, this is a great thing, it means we know now there's a greater interest in these sections than we imagined, so that means more more more.

So let's get to what you all are waiting for,

The next challenge topic.

This month's Challenge is entitled "The Showdown"

- The Showdown -

An action packed confrontation between two characters. One character is losing but makes a spectacular comeback just when you thought all hope was lost.

This is that huge fight between the Boss and the Hero, or the dramatic clash that has led up to your dramatic quest.

The animation can be done however you choose - whether you use segmented characters and just "block out" the animation; whether you choose to create the animation with low poly characters, as if it were a scene from within the game; or whether you decide to go all out for a full blown cinematic. The important thing is that you create a fantastic fight and a great comeback.

The final rules for the challenge are:

1) Concept has to be entirely original. Absolutely NO "expansions" or "sequels" to existing "showdowns", and NO "showdowns" based on films/existing games/existing television programs.
2) The genre of the "showdown" must be clearly stated at the beginning, whether it is a drama, a sci-fi, an adventure, etc. A short background story must also be given.
3) For the characters, you can use either low poly models, hi-res (cinematic models) or segmented models.
4) Bumpmaps are allowed throughout the challenge and for final voting if you wish to use them (so you don't have to texture your character if you don't feel the need to). It is all about the animation anyway.
5) No dialogue is allowed, but you can add audio effects and music.
6) Camera cuts and camera motion are allowed.
7) Fur plugins are allowed.
8) The animation MUST be at least 15 seconds long, and no longer than 20 seconds.
9) Quicktime with Sorenson 3 a must (Sorenson 3 codec should be free within the Quicktime install) As a side note DiVX animations are welcomed for PC viewers, but only for the final.
10) Blendshapes/Morph Targets are allowed for this challenge.

The Challenge starts June 3rd, 2003 and will run until July 12th, 2003 Midnight GMT

An excellent idea was suggested to have a countdown timer located on the cgchallenge site. This will now always be implemented.

additional notes:

- Please provide some form of concept art, a doodle is fine.
- Render from a few different point of views so we can see details. Remember that this is a WIP challenge, so it is a requirement to show the steps you used, and help out as much as you can, of course you're not obligated to, but it will help those that need it greatly.

There are however some restrictions to prevent unnecessary issues:
  • Images with a direct outside linking should NOT exceed the size of either 800x600 or 600x800 in the forum itself. . . If you wish to show a larger formatted picture, do so using the new cgchallenge.com site. . .this is to help those people with small monitors and slow connections.
  • To avoid server bandwith issues we recommend keeping your test animations below 150K, anything above this is problematic (this of course applies only to those people that will be uploading their WIP to our servers).

A final reminder that the focus of the challenge is animation. Try not to get caught up in details concerning hi-res models, blendshapes, intricate lighting, dynamics, etc. Final judging will be made only on the animation and acting displayed. Please do not forget the reason for the challenge. The Animation Challenge is to showcase and improve upon your animation skills in an open and inviting friendly forum.

When you begin a new thread please use the following syntax
