Should UV map borders be smooth or hard?

Should UV map borders be smooth or hard?

By default, when you hit smooth mesh preview (3), maya smooths the internal uvs, but keeps the borders hard. This seems ideal if I planned on keeping my mesh low-res and unsmoothed (for instance a video game character).
But if my mesh is going to be smooth in the final renders, should the UV map borders also be smooth?
