Blend Shape error; Need advice.

I'll start by saying that this is the first time I've used blend shapes and it happens to be in a rather complex setting. I'm having a problem assigning a target shape to the base character. When I attempt to do this, I receive the following errors:

// Error: line 0: Mismatch in target and base shape hierarchies. //
// Error: line 0: No deformable objects selected. // 

I'm sure both of the meshes are same in terms of component quantity and order. I'm also not sure what the "base shape hierarchies" is supposed to mean. I deleted both the target and bases' histories and they both have separate shape objects. Anyone have any knowledge on this?

I think I've found the solution for anyone interested. The mesh was within a group, and the target object had to be in a separate group at the same level as the group with the character mesh (not within the same group). Then the groups themselves had to be blended.
