Mootzoid - first plugin for Maya + introducing myself

Hello Maya community!

My name is Eric Mootz a.k.a. Mootzoid and I have been programming tools and plugins for Softimage for many years, perhaps you heard of some them (emFluid, emPolygonizer, emFlock, ..).

A few weeks ago I finally started to work on a first plugin for Maya. I had quite some fun digging into the Maya SDK, understanding how Maya works "under the hood" and so on.

There is a first beta of the plugin emReader available for testing, if anybody is interested. It can be downloaded here on the emReader web page. To be honest, this plugin is a bit unspectacular (it loads geometry cache files), but it was mainly to get familiar with Maya's SDK. During the next weeks I will be working on adapting my particle mesher emPolygonizer4 for Maya.

Cheers!
Eric

Eric,

nice to see you working for Maya now, too!
You know, Maya is future proof, other dcc software no more : /

By the way our brand new german Maya forum is here:

Hi SePu,

Oh yes, there are more plugins to come!

During the last weeks I have been working on emPolygonizer4 for Maya and it is nearly finished. In fact the first beta will be available in about two weeks.
I will post when it is available, but you can also just check the emPolygonizer4 web page from time to time.
Or subscribe to my newsletter.

Cheers,
Eric

I really don't understand you dicision Eric!

It's like choosing to go for vacation to a shinking ship that is being evacuated.

Everybody is leaving but you go choose to go there and on top of that you invest some good amount time?

I guess the way Autodesk treated Softimage wasn't a good lesson for a all of us...

I wouldn't normaly post something so negative but I do like your work and I wouldn't like to see it getting lost inside the Bugland...

everyone is leaving maya..? its more the other way around... maya is getting more dev time than any other autodesk app... and more and more studios are goin to use it...

I think its hard to read which way things are going. Personally, my next 3D app is going to be to learn to develop inside one of the game engines. I have no idea how hard it is to develop plugins for those platforms, but perhaps something to consider...

You should note that Eric is also developing for fabric. I am strongly convinced he knows what he is doing ; )

Ha, ha, yeeees, I *totally* know what I am doing

@papd:
I really would not waste too much thoughts on "is it worth to port AB to XY?". Maya is definitely going to be around for quite a while, same goes for Softimage, 3ds max and all the others. Surplus the work to convert an existing plugin to another 3D application is fairly low compared to the work it took to develop it in the first place.
Also, having a plugin work with different 3D apps will benefit the plugin's development, since a whole horde of new users (i.e. Maya users) will come up with new ideas, new requests, etc., so on the long run I truely believe that it is far from being a waste of time to port plugins to Maya. Or to any other package.

@sciLoop:
That is correct. When the beta of emPolygonizer4 for Maya gets released (in about a week) I will start working on the Fabric Engine version of emPolygonizer4 as well as a few other things for Fabric. A first beta of emPolygonizer4 for Fabric should also be released this month.
