Selection tool in 2014

Am I the only one who's heavily annoyed by one major change to the selection tool in 2014?

The change I'm speaking of, is that fact that you can no longer select edges and vertices at the same time. This means that my usual box modeling method, one using the "connect components" tool a lot, is now completely ruined. I can't in one move connect through several vertices and edges,

I'm wondering if this is a mistake from Autodesk's side or I'm missing something?

Yes, I also noticed this behavior change, and it's extremely annoying indeed.

I'm not sure if there is a native maya equivalent, but if you enable the modeling toolkit you can switch to "multicomponent" mode.
