Red face Maya save error - linux

I have the student version of maya 2014 on my ubuntu 13.04.

It loads up and I can model but when I load image planes a dialogue box appears and says as it is a student version i cannot use it commercially.

Then it closes and this error appears in the console Signal:
11 (Unknown Signal) Fatal Error. Attempting to save in /usr/tmp/

Also when it saves normally it says error saving in the maya mel line that it couldn't save,l both .ma and .mb

I think it may be a problem with jpeg. Try loading a texture map with any jpg image and if maya crashes, do this:

* make sure you have libjpeg62 installed (install if you don't have it. You don't need additional libs)

* open the file /usr/autodesk/maya2014-x64/bin/maya in any text editor and insert the following code in line 185 (right after setenv LIBQUICKTIME...)
setenv LD_PRELOAD /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/

* save the file and start a new maya session

just make sure the path and file exists (I'm using crunchbang so it shouldn't be that different).
