recessed lighting in maya 2013

i'm making a modern kitchen scene and can't seem to get the recessed lights above the sink to look right. if i use a spot light i only get a circle on the counter. i'm still a little new new to maya, so any pointers would help. thx

For can lights, you'll want to use two pieces of geometry and one spot light, set to area light disc mode, pointing down. Model you rims, which are generally white painted metal, and then your lens, which can be a simple half-sphere squashed down almost flat. Set the lens to not cast shadows or receive them, then make a mia_material_x for the lens and name it accordingly. In this mia_material_x, pick a glass preset for now and then go to the Advanced section. In the "Additional Color" slot, link up a mia_light_surface shader. This shader will give your lens brightness as well as emit Final Gather, if you desire.

Now make a spotlight, and in the mental ray section click on Area Light, and set it to disc. Put it just above the lens geometry and then you should be off to a good start! The spot light will produce your raytracing, photons, etc. The lens's shader will just help it look more natural. You can of course go for a more complex model, but hopefully this will help you get going in the right direction.
