Import OBJ from Rhino shaded geometry around edges

Curious if someone can shed some light on this.
I have an obj I am importing from Rhino, everything seems to be fine other then these dark shaded areas on the polygon faces.
I assumed it is a normal issue, I have tried unlocking them, setting them to faces, reversing, softening, hardening, just everything to try get a better result, nothing has helped.

If you can shed some light I would appreciate some it!
Thanks in advance,

strange, normally set to face and then re-set them to match your desired normal angle works just fine...

I am finding that if I delete my IBL or Mental ray sky the issue is no longer there.
Does this make any sense to anyone?
It doesnt seem to be the final gather either because I have adjusted the accuracy, filter etc.
Any insight anyone?

Thanks in advance!

I'm assuming you're exporting a NURBS Rhino object directly... What does your mesh look like in Rhino, if you "mesh" it first? Run some quick renders from within Rhino and see if you find any such artifacts.

In your export options, did you crank the quality up all the way? What's your polycount here? I do a lot of custom faucet/fixture modeling for arch/viz, and sometimes to get those curves to render clean you've gotta export as high as possible.

I often have trouble in Maya with imported .obj Normals, so do a manual check on those areas? Turn on Show Normals in your shape node and get in there just to be sure. You may need to flip a certain area of normals - Maya will only rarely actually detect what you want, if you "Set to Face", since the Rhino faces are telling Maya that they are already correct. You can check your Normals in Rhino too, but this will still occur on occasion in my experience, sooner or later.
