Baking Vertex Light Map Maya never finishes?

Hey all-

So I have this geometry that I'm baking a vertex light map for, and once I have it start, Maya seems to only run on one core, using about 33% CPU, and churns for hours. I killed it after 4 hours and tried a few things, but got the same result.

Maya 2009, Windows 7

I get no error messages and of course, I can't do anything with the program because it's frozen until I kill it. Has anyone seen this?

I was thinking the geometry could be causing it because it's a merge of several smaller pieces, with history deleted. The UVs layout looks okay. One other thing - using cleanup on the model, just zero map area fix, causes a crash everytime. I was thinking maybe the model has this issue that causes the bake to act this way. I'm not sure.

Help? I'm going to try and let this churn overnight and see what happens....

It finished overnight, so that's something. Strange that it was never using more than a third of the cpu power, or more of the memory, for that matter.
