Maya mesh merging problems

I have been having a bit of trouble trying to merge my characters fingers onto him. When I do I get these weird lines in the mesh as the image shows below. I am just curious as to know how I can remove these lines so it blends in with the merged mesh.

Normals -> Soften Edge. You can apply this to the entire object or, if you want to maintain the "hardness" of some areas, select the specific edges and apply.
