Depending on wich maya version you use (im using 2012) you can use the cut faces tool.
Enter the options and check extract cut faces then just drag and place the cut were you want, you can use shift to get even 45 angles.

Duplicate it, select one half and delete it on one object then do the reverse on the other. You could also use the cut faces tool under edit mesh menu

I select the fence and go to edit menu and cut face tool
after select the faces and delete
it works properly. thanks
