Question Trying to get displacement map to work

Hi. I have a satyr model I'm texturing, and I wanted to try and use a painted displacement map to give him a fuzzy bushy hair, moustache, beard and eyebrows. (Yes, I know using mudbox would be easier for texturing and displacement than painting the unwrapped character, but I don't really know mudbox and for some reason this model will not work in mudbox anyway even when I can get him to import, so I figure I'll stick with what I know).

I'm following the instructions in the Mastering Maya 2009 book (I'm working in 2013, but the instructions match up pretty well so I've just kept using that book), but when I MMB-drag the displacement node over the material and choose Default (or anything else), it doesn't automatically attach the node to the material. Instead, I keep getting the connection editor between the node and the material, with "displacement" already italicized on the node, and nothing I can find on the material to connect it to. I have no idea how what to do to make it work, and I'm not even sure what to enter into Google for help (I've tried, but I keep getting displacement map tutorials that don't give me any troubleshooting information on how to fix this problem). Little help, thx?
