UV set not corresponding properly

Hello, this is my first post. I apologize for being such a noob and thank you in advance for your help.

I'm trying to understand UV mapping. I've modelled a simple pear and made UV sets for the main part and the stem using cylindrical mapping. I used the copy UVs to UV set command to get the stem and the fruit on the same set and exported a UV snapshot. I painted a simple texture in photoshop, created a material for it in Maya and applied it to the model. I've got the UV texture editor open, I can see my texture fitting into the UV set I created, but the model is not displaying my texture the way it should be. Can anyone help?
