What is the bare minimum needed?

Hello all,

I'm going to be running a Maya animation workshop which will last about 1 month. 2 or 3 times a week, 2 hours per session. I'm going to be teaching students who may or may not understand the concept of 3D space, but they certainly have no knowledge of Maya as a software package.

I'm trying to be efficient in the content of the workshop, so what is the absolute minimum things they should learn about Maya before being able to create any animation whatsoever?
We're not talking about using character rigs even. Or, if we do use character rigs, they will be the most basic things like a ball rig or something like monty (a ball with legs). I can't remember how/when I started to learn the program, so I'm not sure where to start with them.

Please help me out.
