Extrude problem

I am currently learning how to model a human but am having a small problem.

I have set the project up with a subdiv proxy.

When extruding faces on the model however, a ring appears on the proxy and am unable to figure out why.

Any help would be appreciated.

The light blue ring is the rotation selector. Click it and you can rotate the extrusion. The outer ring is for camera based rotation.

Yes I understand that, I meant on the subdiv proxy side around the faces which I chose to extrude there are faces missing.

Offhand I would say its because you have faces with 0 area because you have not pulled out the extrusion yet. The smoothing algorithm doesn't like that.

Try re-assigning your material at object level.
If you have somehow ended up with a mesh with sub-object assigned materials (faces), then your extrude is not going to automatically assign any newly created faces to that material. They will have no material, and show as transparent.
