Angry Walk Cycle

Can some please help me with tutorial for angry walk cycle?

Which is something like this.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_08RWZwOhk8.. with strides a little longer and also the body goes a little front.. I am new to maya and just learning it. Sorry to be a noob if this is simple for you guys.

Normal walk cycle is ok but when it comes to a character walk cycle i am facing a lot of difficulties. It would be more helpful if someone could post a tutorial..

I do have the Animators Survival Kit book with me.. For the past two days i have been trying get the walk perfect but still it does not look angry at all.. I would appreciate if someone could help me..

Personally that walk you linked to doesn't look all that angry to me, the main thing that helps sell it is the facial expression, but the way the legs are bent on the contact pose and the generally even spacing just feels wrong to me. For pretty much all walks the forward foot should be straight on the contact pose and to make it look angry there should be a more 'stompy' feel to it.

Really the key to this is reference, try to find an angry walk (of a real person) on youtube etc or get a camera and film yourself stomping around in an angry way and analyze what it is that makes it feel angry. I would imagine for example that the front foot would come down a lot harder (wider spacing) in a stomp compared to a regular walk.

The rest is regular animation principles. Post your progress on somewhere like the 11SecondClub and you'll hopefully get feedback from other animators as to how it's working (or not as the case may be).

Good luck, walks are damn hard! People often assume they are a good beginner exercise but they take a lot of practice to get right. I have a tutorial on a general walk with a Hulk-character on youtube BTW, I'm using C4D in the tutorial but the same methods work fine in Maya

Thanks for you reply mate.. I checked that video and but what i needed is an angry walk.. after what you said i do find that the reference i posted from youtube does not look good.. :(

I searched a lot but i cant find a tutorial for angry walk. I have taped myself but still i am new to animating and it would be nice if someone has a tutorial for angry walk..

Honestly I don't think you will ever find a tutorial that is exactly what you need. Tutorials are there to teach you the basics and principles and then expects you to apply them to your own shots etc. Asking for an exact tutorial is the same as asking for a tutorial to paint like van Gogh. Don't forget animation is as much a creative process as any other art. I agree with Brian, the best you can do is start taping yourself, create the walkcycle and post it on a forum like 11 secondclub. I'm sure people will critique the animation. They give you tips and comments and then you go back and work on your animation a bit more and post it again. This isn't any different than a teacher that is teaching you. There is no animation teacher that sits next to you and tels you every single step you should do and takes you by the hand.

Anyway good luck with your animation. I'm sure that you will be able to do it. If you can create a standard walkcycle you can create an angry walkcycle, be it with hard work and trial and error.

I think it depends on how stylized you want to get, and the age of the character. A younger character - I mean a child - will dramatize a walk with the full body and stomp around, perhaps.


An older person will contain anger and then let it out in spurts of frustration.

Of course any kind of combination.

Also I think that it would help to think of an animal that would represent the emotion and stance of the character. In this case a bull perhaps?

Think of an angry person as engaged in an outflow of energy that is very focused and intense. So likely the character would lean forward, clinched fists, head looking dead ahead at a target.

Or you can play it that the character is trying to hold things in place. So the body could be very stiff. This is a characteristic of anger.

For the rest of the body it would depend on the age and style of the animation. For realistic animation I would not put more emphasis on the lower part of the body. Put the emotion in the arms, chest and head. For a younger person, the legs and feet can be more involved. For a stylized cartoon animation you could not go too loud with it and make it like a baby stomping around having a fit if you wanted, even if an adult.

Wow this is great.. Even these slight changes in the walk gives a characterization.. Thanks a lot.. I'll post my animated walk once i have completed it for more suggestions..
