Exclamation Putting 3d object into still photograph?

I'm a photographer and photo-manipulator. I like to put 3d object/character into my still images.

I have downloaded maya 2014 trial, but I'm really new to 3d world. I need some suggestions.

what I want to accomplish is that the 3d character should perfectly mix into my photograph's environment's lighting. Most importantly the shadow and object placement should align seamlessly in the photograph.

I tried google it and so far it seems the technique is called 'background shader'

Please help me with some right keywords or guideline so I can find some tutorial on the net.

Thanks a lot.

Consider signing up for some online 3D training like Digital Tutors. Its a much more efficient way to get up to speed.
