Duplicated group members left behind?

I'm baffled. I've got a simple tire group, constructed from revolved and lofted NURBS surfaces. The whole thing was copied and pasted from another project.

So I select the group, hit "Command-D" and then move the resulting group, as shown in the accompanying screenshots. The queer thing is the three lofted surfaces that represent the thru-holes of the mag-type wheel remain selected as though they are part of the duplicated group, yet stay with the original instead of moving with the copy. I can select the three surfaces, which appear under the new group in the outliner and moves them manually over to the new group, but if I try to duplicate this new group, the same thing happens.

Any ideas? I've got a lot of tires to build.
