Getting Orientation Back

This is something I've always redone instead of fixing, but question is: how do you set the orientation of your rotation or translation back to the objects orientation? Switching between the different modes (local, object, world, etc) does nothing.

Did you freeze transformations? If so I don't believe you can get back the original orientation.

move tool settings > set to edge.

yes...i did some research and it seems the only way to fix it is via scripts or some rigging tricks with locators, but combining a mesh messes it up anyways. Best bet is to just do all rotation, translation, scale, before even moving the object into place, and developing that as a habit.
