How to select linked geometry in Maya?

Hi there,
I've just started learning how to use Maya (2013), and I can't find out how to select linked geometry.

At the moment, I have to select some geometry, then open the selection editor (dunno if that's the right name) and grow the selection.
What I want is to be able to select a vert/edge/face, and to be able to quickly select the rest of the geometry connected to my selection.

Any ideas?

you could try selecting the object in outliner, or switch from select by component type to object type..

you can also sidewalk (i think that's what it is called) by using the arrow keys (left & right, up and down)

In face select mode double click on a face to select all connected faces. In edge select mode double click on an edge to select the loop. To select a face loop select a face and then shift double click on an adjacent face to select that loop.

Just a sampling of selection options.

You can use the < and > keys to grow selection on selected components (vertex, edges, faces).
