Smooth Segmentation

Hi all,

I tried posting this last week, but it seems it never showed up for some reason...

My question is about how to cleanly segment an arbitrary polygonal mesh (say I have a high-res head model and want to shatter it or dice it into cubes). I'm wondering how to do this in a way such that I can create smooth, beveled edges along the cuts so that it retains an organic quality. Is there any clean way to do this in Maya, or even any other 3D package?

To summarize, I would like to take an arbitrary mesh and arbitrarily slice it such that the resulting edges are beveled and natural looking.
