How to detach playback controls?

Is there anyway to detach and move the playback controls? (play, stop, next keyframe etc...) I would like to have them floating, so i can move them near my cam window. would speed things up

It is possible, but not recommended.

Here's how you get those controls into a separate window:

Code:
global string $gPlayBackForwardButton; string $tcLayout = `control -q -p $gPlayBackForwardButton`; string $tcFormLayout = `control -q -p $tcLayout`; $window = `window -rtf 1 myTimeControlsWindow`; $form = `formLayout`; layout -e -p $form $tcLayout; $children = `layout -q -ca $form`; $tcLayout = $children[0]; formLayout -e -af $tcLayout "left" 0 -af $tcLayout "top" 0 $form; showWindow $window; string $otherUI[] = `layout -q -ca $tcFormLayout`; formLayout -e -af $otherUI[1] "right" 0 -ac $otherUI[0] "right" 0 $otherUI[1] $tcFormLayout;

This isn't reversible; once the controls are in the new window, you'd have to write some code to put them back. Otherwise, closing the new window deletes the playback controls until you restart Maya.

The more obvious solution, and I wonder why you aren't using it, is to simply use Hotkeys to control playback. I've never touched those controls manually since forever.

A non-permanent solution would be to create your own time controls.

They are basically just symbolButtons with various commands attached which you can look up in Programs/Autodesk/Maya201x/scripts/others/timeSlider.mel

In fact, you could just copy that script and replace the global variables (that identify the UI buttons in the interface) with your own.

Again, this seems like a huge waste of time when you can just use hotkeys.

I use hotkeys similar to Motionbuilder, for start stop toggle and next/ last key.
Is the main one you need playback toggle on/off?
Should be easy enough to make a mini floating panel with Mel.

you could also try using "keyfriend" script.
http://lesterbanks.com/2012/11/keyf...eys-and-curves/

It has transport / playback controls at the bottom of a roll out.
