Fur rendering with weird geometry contours showing - anyone know what causes this?

I've been working with Maya Fur for a few years now, and I still haven't figured out this problem. It was happening on a long-haired cat model: the fur on the sides of the face would render with weird "fringing" right around the area where the polygon geometry edges would be. In some poses it would show up worse than in others. I've been doing my best to work around it since I couldn't fix it, but today I was trying to do a quick render of a grassy scene, and it's doing that fringing thing really badly. The geometry the fur is attached to is just a poly plane that I smoothed and shaped a little with the Soft Mod tool - nothing fancy. I painted a couple attributes like Polar and Length, and tweaked the sliders on Color, Base and Tip Width, Base and Tip Curl, Scraggle, and Inclination. Plus, I fiddled with the Map Multipliers, Noise Frequency, and Noise Amplitude. In some areas on my grass, I can see "grid lines" almost. I tried tweaking the fur render settings to calculate area values differently, I tried changing the Equalizer Map, softening the normals on the ground plane, changing the angle of view on the camera, changing the fur description even... nothing I've tried works. I also tried rendering it with the ground plane hidden and that didn't help either. Is there anything else I should try? Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I would appreciate any advice you can give!

By the way, I'm using Maya 2013. My computer was purchased last September; it is an HP EliteBook 8570w with an Intel Core i7-3820QM CPU (quad core) @ 2.70GHz with 8GB of RAM and Windows 7. The video card is a GFX NVIDIA Quadro K1000M. The scene I'm rendering is made of polys, a PaintFX tree, and the grass is just Maya Fur. I'm rendering with Maya Software.

Here is an image of the render and the scene inside of Maya: http://www.cyskasiberians.com/image...syHillScene.jpg

Thank you for your time!
